Trial Bay Gaol

The Trial Bay Goal is our most popular tourist attraction & an icon not to be missed when visiting South West Rocks. Opened in 1886 and taking 12 years to build.

The prison laborers were there to construct a breakwater to make Trial Bay a safe harbour. During World War I the gaol became an internment camp for people of German descent who were feared to be enemy sympathizers.

Today, this picturesque historic ruin stands as a testament to those who lived and died here, with a museum and memorial for visitors to get a better idea of life in those days.

Smoky Cape Lighthouse

Perched high on a headland in the beautiful Hat Head National Park on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Smoky Cape and its historic residences is the most elevated lighthouse on the east coast.

Completely surrounded in a natural bushland setting with sweeping coastal views, it's a perfect place for whale watching, bush walking, swimming, fishing or just relaxing with family and friends.

South West Rocks Beaches

South West Rocks offers a great variety of magnificent beaches with breathtaking coastal scenery in the Macleay Valley Coast and is situated at the entrance to the Macleay River.

Beaches include: Horseshoe Bay, Main Beach, Trial Bay, Back Beach and Lighthouse Beach, Little Bay, Gap Beach and North Smoky Beach.

South West Rocks Surf Club

South West Rocks SLSC was formed in 1919 and has operated continuously ever since.
The club is a community organization run by volunteers who are dedicated to protecting members of the public who surf and swim at our beaches. We conduct patrols on weekends and public holidays during the season from October to April each year.

They are a welcoming and inclusive club and would love to spread awareness of beach and surf safety either out on the beach, or up at the clubhouse at the boulders bar and bistro!
